ow, organic matter-plant leftovers called biomass-can be converted into a burnable gas that is converted into electricity. This new process is cleaner and more efficient than burning biomass in an incinerator to generate power. Still many of us burn up plant materials in open fires, literally letting them just go up in smoke! When we use these leftovers to create power, we turn waste into a valuable raw material. Plant leftovers are directly available from agriculture, forestry, and food processing. Also, gas emitted from the biomass thrown into landfills can be captured and used. Right now, energy from plants supplies 2% of the electricity used in California. Next - Polluting Energy Sources |
