il provides only about 2% of the electricity in the U.S. Even though
it burns cleaner than coal, oil still emits large quantities of CO2,
SO2, and NOx per unit of energy produced. A lot of the U.S. oil that is
easiest to extract is already gone. Due to our large consumption, we must
import oil from other countries, which has many risks, and/or rely on
new technologies to extract it here. Again, it is not a renewable resource
and puts us at risk as we breathe the pollution it creates.
