n the west, at least 20-40 million acres are gearing up for big wildfires
in the coming decades. The US Forest Service estimates forests are 82%
denser than in 1928. Dense undergrowth, combined with increasingly taller
layers of intermediate vegetation has turned western forests into deadly
time bombs. Fire quickly climbs up dense vegetation like a ladder until
it tops out at the uppermost , or crown level of the forest and races
out of control as a catastrophic fire. We will need smart, aggressive, and effective treatment to stop terrible
damage.
