he
Ambient Air Monitoring Program assesses air quality. This program collects
air samples through a network of monitoring stations and analyzes them
in order to:
• prove that an air basin or area has met the mandatory air quality standards
or that progress is being made to meet them by a certain time
• activate emergency control procedures to prevent or dispel dangerous
air pollution levels
• track pollution trends throughout a region, including rural areas
• provide a research database to evaluate the effects of various plans
for urban development, land-use, and transportation on air pollution control
• help develop and evaluate ways of getting rid of pollution
• serve as the basis for various predictive models
