he EPA's ambient air quality monitoring program is carried out by state
and local agencies and federal land managers. Stations in a monitoring
network fall into 4 major groups: State and Local Air Monitoring Stations
(SLAMS), National Air Monitoring Stations (NAMS), and Special Purpose
Monitoring Stations (SPMS) measure the criteria pollutants. The 4th group,
the Photochemical Assessment Monitoring Stations (PAMS), measure ozone
ingredients or recursors. In California, over 200 air pollution monitoring
stations are operated by: the Calfornia Air Resources Board (CARB), local
Air Pollution Control Districts or Air Quality Management Districts, private
contractors, and the National Parks Service and U.S. Forest Service.
